Atrocities against Puppies: Maneka Gandhi demands suspension of accused Nursing Students

Kolkata: Union Minister Maneka Gandhi recently called up the senior authorities at the at state-run Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRS Medical College) and asked them to immediately suspend the two nursing students, who were held for allegedly killing 16 puppies. The Union minister is also an animal rights activist.
The Union Women and Child Development Minister, who telephoned the senior NRS Medical College official, also told that she would "ensure that the license of Hospital's Nursing wing" was cancelled unless the duo were suspended, an official attached to the medical college informed PTI.
"Mrs Gandhi called up and spoke to a senior official of our hospital and talked about the matter," the official further confirmed.
Medical Dialogues had recently reported about the case. On January 13, carcasses of 16 puppies were found in plastic bags in front of a hostel at the medical college. Preliminary reports revealed that the puppies were beaten to death.
Acting on an FIR lodged on Monday, the police had identified some students and security guards on the basis of CCTV footage and interrogated them for hours. The NRS medical college authorities had ordered an internal inquiry.

Recently, outside the chief judicial magistrate court at Sealdah in the city, where the two nursing students were produced; animal lovers were seen shouting slogans and waving placards demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits.
Advocate Md Sajid, who represented animal rights activist associations in the court, confirmed, “They were granted bail against registered security of Rs 2,000 and a local of security of another Rs 2,000…”

The three-member committee constituted by the medical college authorities submitted a report to the hospital on 16th January.
In its report, the committee has held the two nursing students responsible for the killing the animals on the basis of which the hospital authorities have decided not to allow them to attend classes till the probe is complete. Steps would be taken against the three others who are said to be third-year students of nursing.

Meanwhile, an altercation broke out between NRS Hospital authorities and students of Nursing Training during a meeting at the hospital premises which was followed by pushing and shoving, police said.
"The meeting got disrupted after students turned unruly and an altercation broke out. It was followed by pushing and shoving resulting in the disruption of the meeting and our policemen posted there intervened," he said.
"The Nursing Super was shifted to the Hospital quarters while the Super and deputy Super were taken outside in official car by the police personnel present there. The situation is under control at the moment," he said.
