Another private medical college, if Peerless Group granted MCI permission

KOLKATA: The Medical Council of India’s (MCI) clearance to the Peerless Hospital and BK Roy Research Centre’s request to be allowed to enter the medical education arena may see the city get a new private medical college soon. Presently KPC is the other private medical college in operation in Kolkata.


"We plan to start a medical college right here where the hospital is situated. The foundation of the college is expected to be laid in two years," Sunil Kanti Roy, the Chairman of Peerless Hospital informed Times of India. He is also the Managing Director, Peerless Group.


The college will commence operations with a seat strength of 100 students.MCI norms allow 10 acres as the minimum land required for setting up a medical college, provided it has an affiliated operational hospital attached to it.


The 400-bedded Peerless Hospital, one of the oldest private hospitals in the state, now stands on a 10-acre plot off EM Bypass.

Conferred the best healthcare and social care support award at the third edition of the Healthcare Leadership Awards, The hospital has been around for the past 25 years.


The hospital expansion plans besides academics also include in its foray- cancer treatment.The hospital expansion plans also include a radiotherapy unit for cancer patients and a kidney transplant facility. A green signal for the kidney transplant facility will be given soon after the state health department visits the hospital to inspect the unit.


"We want to create a world-class facility for cancer treatment and research. Setting up such a facility was my elder brother BK Roy's dream," Roy told TOI.


"Vision of this hospital is to create an environment where all professionals are able to fulfill a commitment to their patients without any obligations. Peerless Hospitals is at the forefront of putting ethics in every sphere of its activities and has organized multiple workshops in the city to promote it."
