Guntur: The Andhra Pradesh government is looking for a hike of 150 MBBS seats in its government Medical Colleges. The state’s Medical Education Department has sent a proposal to the Medical Council of India (MCI) to this seat hike requesting acceptance for the same.

The Medical Education Department in its communication to the MCI has requested for the following colleges for seat raise:

  • Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Ongole from 100 seats to 150 seats

  • Srikakulam Government Medical College from 100 MBBS seats to 150 seats

  • Kadapa Government Medical College from 50 MBBS seats to 200 seats.

The council teams are presently on inspection rounds in various government medical colleges inspecting the infrastructure, labs, hostel, library and faculty. Based on inspection reports will follow seat hike recommendations for the next academic year by the apex education regulator.

The state is hopeful that its request for a seat hike in government medical colleges will be accepted for the next academic session as it has taken steps towards compliance by filling up vacant faculty positions in government medical colleges and is also developing infrastructure as per the council guidelines.

“We have sent proposals to the MCI seeking another 150 MBBS seats in the government medical colleges in Ongole, Srikakulam and Kadapa. At present, the MCI teams are inspecting the infrastructure in the colleges to sanction additional MBBS seats. We have sufficient infrastructure and facilities to get additional MBBS and PG seats,” Director of Medical Education (AP) Dr N Subba Rao revealed.
