Andhra Pradesh: AIIMS to commence with 50 students

Vijayawada: AIIMS with a student strength of 50 is to start from the next academic session. The announcement was made by Minister for Health and Medical Education Kamineni Srinivas. This detail was revealed by the Minister at an interaction program with a 7-year-old boy, who was donated stem cells by a young professional to save his life


The Minister addressing the gathering said that the AIIMS team would be visiting the capital to finalize modalities.


Appreciating DATRI, India’s largest blood stem cell donors’ registry, Kamineni said that donating stem cell was an easy process. He also generated interest in the setting up of a government run stem cell registry.


“Employees and students can register and can feel the satisfaction giving something that offers new lease of life for others,” he added.


The Minister felicitated the young Chaitanya (32), an IT professional working in Hyderabad, who was responsible for saving 7-year-old Yoka Sarvesh from Dindugal. Yoka when diagnosed with Thalassemia Major, was just 4-month-old and needed regular blood transfusions till he could find a life-saving blood stem cell donor.


Chaitanya who in 2012 registered with DATRI during an awareness drive conducted in Hyderabad, within four years of registration received a call informing him that he was a perfect match for a child with a serious blood disorder. With the family supporting the endeavor in a positive way, saw Chaitanya happily donate his stem cells to save the young boy.


“I was very happy to hear that I was a potential match for someone. I can say with pride that I experienced one of the biggest joys of my life in meeting Yoka, who is leading a healthy life because of small effort on my part,” Chaitanya added.
