Anaesthesia no more specialized branch in PG Ayurveda: MUHS
Mumbai: Anaesthesia will no longer be a specialized branch in PG Ayurveda Curriculum at Maharashtra based Ayurvedic colleges. With this development, the seats allotted to PG Anaesthesia (Sangyaharan) in PG Ayurveda specialization have been merged with PG Surgery (Shalya Chikitsa).
The direction to this effect was given by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM),, the statutory body under the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, set up in 1971 under the Indian Medicine Central Council Act. It is one of the Professional councils under the University Grants Commission (UGC) to monitor higher education in Indian systems of medicine, including Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani.
In compliance with the same, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) issued an order to all of its affiliated institutes which offer a Postgraduate course in Ayurveda directing the colleges to merge the concerned departments.

Resultantly, Ayurveda surgeons will have to call Anaesthetists from modern medicine to assist them during the time of surgery.
Meanwhile, Ayurveda doctors have welcomed this move mentioning that since Ayurveda surgeons also use modern Anaesthesia drugs during surgeries, there is no need for a separate department for Sangyaharan.
Confirming the order to TOI, Dean, Faculty of Ayurveda at MUHS, Dr Shrikant Deshmukh stated, "We have followed the directives of CCIM. Sangyaharan was a specialization until 2016. Now, even Ayurveda doctors use modern drugs to provide anaesthesia to patients. So, there is no need for a separate branch, separate academic set-up and seats for this subject. All PG seats of this subject are merged with PG surgery now… But merging seats doesn't mean that surgeons have the authority to give anaesthesia. Having a specialized anaesthetist at the time of surgery is a must. Now, we will request anaesthetists from modern medicine faculties. They will assist our surgeons," he added.
However, the doctors who are already specialized in Sangyaharan can continue working as anaesthetists, as per the MUHS order.
