The Christian Medical College [CMC Vellore] is one of the premier medical colleges for MBBS course in the country. The institute, constituent college is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai. In 2018, the Christian Medical College Vellore proudly celebrated the completion of a hundred years of Medical Education, which began in 1918, bringing to fruition the dream of our visionary founder, Dr Ida Sophia Scudder.


The Medical College is an unaided, non-capitation, Christian minority, educational institution admitting students on merit on an all India basis.


The college, which is recognised by the apex medical body, Medical Council of India (MCI) offers multiple UG, PG and Doctoral courses focusing on the areas of Medicine, Surgery, and Nursing.


The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore was established and is maintained by the Christian Medical College Vellore Association, a registered society, formed by over 50 different Indian Christian churches and Christian organizations which run over 225 hospitals, health centre's and dispensaries throughout the length and breadth of this country, many of which are situated in remote rural areas.



CMC VELLORE COURSES


MBBS at CMC Vellore


The MBBS course is of four and a half years duration and is followed by one year of Compulsory Rotating Residential Internship. The course begins with a short foundation course sensitizing students to the health situation in India, the role of doctors in the community and basic principles of Communication & Ethics.


The undergraduate course in medicine comprises of three stages.




  • The first stage of 12 months duration consists of the basic sciences - Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry.

  • The next stage is of 18 months duration and comprises of clinical and Para-clinical subjects - Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology and Forensic Medicine.

  • The last stage is of 24 months duration and covers Ophthalmology, Oto-rhinolaryngology, Community Medicine, General Medicine, Child Health, Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology.


A block posting in Community Health is an integral part of each stage. Posting in mission hospitals and secondary care centres is a unique feature of medical education.


The internship lasting for 12 months comprises of postings in Community Health, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Child Health, Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine and short electives in various specialities.


Eligibility for Admission to MBBS at CMC Vellore for 2019-2020 academic session


Candidate should have passed the qualifying examination equivalent to 10+2 Higher Secondary period of 12 years of study, the last two years of study comprising of Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio- technology with English. A candidate for admission to the medical course "must have passed in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks taken together in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Botany and Zoology taken together)/Biotechnology at the qualifying exam" (40% aggregate for BC, MBC, SC/ST candidates).


This is as per TN Government and University guidelines. BC, MBC, SC/ST are as defined by the Government of India or States/UTs governments. Candidates should have passed in all subjects of the qualifying examination of the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (Academic) conducted by the Tamil Nadu State Board or any other equivalent examination in one and the same attempt in the subjects.


Candidates should have completed the age of 17 years at the time of admission or should complete the said age on or before 31st December of the said year.


The no. of candidates in MBBS course shall be 100 per year and the distribution is as follows:


1: All India open category- 16 seats
2: Minority Network category- 84 seats.

CMC Vellore MBBS Result


CMC Vellore provides admission to the MBBS programme through NEET. After the declaration of merit list, students have to go through the document verification process.


Note: Sponsored category students of Christian minority have to pass the bible knowledge test of 50 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ's).



PG Medical Courses at CMC Vellore


MD / MS / PG Medical Diploma Courses at CMC Vellore


Candidates who have qualified for the MBBS Degree of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University or any other University recognized as equivalent by the Tamilnadu Dr MGR Medical University and the Indian Medical Council, and have completed their Compulsory Rotating Residential Internship before 31st March 2019, are eligible to apply for PG medical courses at CMC Vellore


However, the candidates should have obtained full registration with their respective State councils at the time of counselling


Post Diploma candidates with a diploma certificate in the same subject need to undergo only 2 years of training for the degree


Those with a service obligation will need to have completed the same by 15th May 2019


Minimum of 50th percentile or revised applicable minimum qualifying percentile in NEET-PG 2019 as determined by the Government.

Facilities for PG Medical Trainees


Stipend: All post-graduate medical courses in CMC are in-service training programmes and postgraduate students are paid a stipend which at present is approximately Rs. 28,000/- per month, while it is approximately Rs. 50,000/- per month for those undergoing post-graduate training in Higher Specialties.


Accommodation: Partly furnished single/shared accommodation is provided for all postgraduate students. Meals can be obtained from the canteens in the hospital premises. Meals can also be had from the mess run at the Men Intern's Quarters or Lady Doctor's Hostel, or from one of the many hotels in the vicinity of the hospital. Students are required to vacate their accommodation within 2 weeks of finishing their course.


Research Activity of Each Department: The Christian Medical College supports an active medical research programme. To broaden this experience, the trainee is encouraged to participate in research activities. A Research Methodology course will be conducted for all newly selected postgraduate students. Attendance for this course is mandatory. Students can obtain research grants from the CMC Research Committee, provided they have attended the research methodology course.


Medical Records Department: In clinical areas, special emphasis is given to medical record keeping. There is a well organised Medical Records Library in the institution as well as a departmental records system. Facilities are provided in these areas for trainees to conduct retrospective case studies from the records.


Recreation: Facilities for tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, football, cricket, hockey and table tennis are available.


Staff/Student Health Clinic: The medical needs of the students and staff of the Christian Medical College are met through the clinic provided for this purpose. Hepatitis B Vaccination is mandatory for all students. If the candidate has already been vaccinated elsewhere, the serum antibody titres need to be confirmed by the Staff Students Health Services.
