Agartala Govt Medical College successfully conducts first Neurosurgery

The patient had been suffering from an intracranial haemorrhage and going through a critical condition


Agartala: The doctors at well known Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) have successfully conducted Neurosurgery, on the third day of the opening of the Neurosurgical unit at the institute. The medical college has achieved this mark after 14 years of its existence.


"The first neurosurgery was conducted successfully in the newly set up unit in the wee hours of March 4 Monday," said Dr Ranjit Das who is the Superintendent of Gobind Ballav Pant Hospital (GBP hospital) attached with Agartala Government Medical College.


A team of experts headed by Dr Siddha Reddy carried out the four hours long surgery of one 65 -year-old Anil Debnath, a resident of Melaghar. The patient had been suffering from an intracranial haemorrhage and going through a critical condition.

Last year in May, for the first time ever in the history of Tripura, the state government had decided to hold special surgery camps in Agartala Government Medical College campus as part of improving the efficiency of the health infrastructure.

Gobind Ballav Pant Hospital is considered as a premier Health Institute of North East India with all branches of Medical Science in curative and diagnostic disciplines. Over the last 4 decades, GBP Hospital was upgraded into a modern tertiary level hospital befitting a teaching hospital.


Agartala Government Medical College has been established in the sprawling campus of this hospital. To comply with all the requirements of a teaching hospital of a Medical College the teaching beds of the hospital was reduced to 300 at inception as per the guideline of MCI. The teaching beds will be increased up to 500 in the 5th year of the medical college.
