79627 MBBS seats in 536 Medical Colleges: Health Minister provides breakup to Parliament

New Delhi: There are 79,627 MBBS seats at 536 total medical colleges operating in the country out of which 276 are government medical colleges while 260 are private medical colleges.

Information to this effect was recently given by the MOS Health to the parliament while he was responding to the questions on the existing number of Government and Private Medical Colleges in the country. The minister also provided a state-wise breakup of the medical colleges and their corresponding MBBS seats

Karnataka yet again topped the list with the highest number of Medical Colleges i.e. 59 and the total of 9145 annual intakes in MBBS courses. The state has a total of 19 government medical colleges and 40 private medical colleges.

In terms of a number of medical colleges, second on the list is Uttar Pradesh with a total of 55 medical colleges (24 government and 31 private) adding a total of 7525 MBBS seats to the national pool.

Maharashtra while having lesser number of medical colleges than UP had higher number of MBBS seats with the state offering 8580 MBBS seats in 52 medical colleges (24 government medical colleges with 4310 seats and 28 private medical colleges with 4270 seats.)

Bagging the fourth position is Tamil Nadu with 26 government medical college with 3400 MBBS seats per year and 23 private colleges with the total annual seats of 3750 MBBS seats.

When it comes to the total number of practising allopathy doctors, Maharashtra topped the list with 1,73,384 number of Doctors Registered with State Medical Councils / Medical Council of India as on 31st of March 2019.

As on 31st of March 2019, the total of 11,59,309 doctors is registered with the State Medical Council\Medical Council of India. With the highest of 173384 doctors in Maharashtra. Tamil Nadu bagged the 2nd position with a total of 135456 doctors. Third on the list is Karnataka with a total of 122875 Doctors.
