7 proposed medical colleges to take Telangana beyond 6000 MBBS seats mark
Hyderabad: Major development in medical education segment is likely to take place in the state Telangana with the establishment of 7 new medical institutes taking the total of Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in the state to 17.
As per July 2019 data, there are 10 GMCs in Telangana and the private sector has 22 medical colleges with a total of 4,990 seats. If the state gets the approval from the concerned authorities for the seven proposed medical colleges at Khammam, Karimnagar, Sangareddy, Mancherial, Bhadrachalam, Bhupalpally, either Tandur or Vikarabad; the MBBS pool in the state will expectedly cross the 6,000 mark.

The confirmation of these proposals was given by the State Health Minister Etela Rajender to the local daily, Telangana Today.
In an endeavour to enhance the medical seats, the minister had met with Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan for approvals and financial support to start new medical colleges.
Opportunely, the state managed to get the financial support for 3 new medical colleges by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). Apart from this, the state has proposed for 7 more medical colleges. The health authorities have an ambitious plan to add 7 more medical colleges in the newly formed districts, added the daily.
Speaking to Telangana Today about the same, the Minister cofirmed "Medical colleges will come up in the newly formed districts and the Centre has promised to support us in this endeavour. For the past six months, we have been holding a series of meetings and discussions on ways to add more seats and create medical colleges."
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about the statement made by the State Health Minister where he informed the Assembly that four new Medical Colleges were established after the formation of Telangana state. Replying to questions from members in the house during question hour, Mr Rajender said that the new Medical Colleges were established at Mahabubnagar, Siddipet, Suryapet and Nalgonda.
AIIMS, Bibinagar also started in 2019 with 50 MBBS seats, the Minister said and added that after the formation of Telangana state ( in 2014), 298 new PG Medical seats and 5 new super-speciality seats have been added.
