37 MBBS students at Deccan College of Medical Sciences Discharged by MCI

Hyderabad: The Deccan College of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad has run into controversy with the Medical Council of India (MCI), discharging 37 of its management quota students on having been granted admission against rules. Admitted in 2015-16, they today face an uncertain future.

The MCI Executive Committee meeting minutes clearly state

"the executive committee did not approve recommendations of the monitoring sub-committee and decided to reiterate the discharge notice on 37 students. The committee further directed the institute to submit compliance within a week. Separate communication has to be sent to the Secretary, medical education, director of medical education and affiliated university not to allow these students to appear at any examination on their course."

Dr Kampa Shankar, the Executive Committee Member of MCI, talking to the TOI revealed, "These 37 students can't pursue their MBBS course and they have been sent home. MBBS admissions under management quota took place against rules. MCI has been arguing that Eamcet ranks have not been taken into consideration during admissions, but the management of Deccan Medical College defended their case. The monitoring committee verified the issue multiple times, but the executive committee decided to discharge the students."

The Principal, Dr H.A Qayyum, of the Deccan College of Medical Sciences, refused to reveal to TOI further details, "I am not competent enough to talk on this issue."

Asaduddin Owaisi, Chairman maintained a discreet silence on the issue to the Press. The case of Deccan Medical College, however, happens to be different from that of Fathima Medical college students as the latter's admissions had been canceled by the Council as the institution had no permission to admit students.
