32 medical colleges might be barred from conducting admissions : MCI
32 Medical Colleges across the country are now facing the Medical Council of India wrath, with the apex medical council threatening to debar these institutes from admitting students coming academic year 2017-18. The main reason for the threat comes in the form of lacunae in infrastructure and teaching norms at these medical colleges.
HT reports that these colleges include the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital and Medical College (Sion Hospital), a private medical college in Pune and the Maharashtra Institute of Medical Education and Research (Talegaon).
With the news coming out, students and parents across Maharasthra were seen voicing their objections over the era of uncertainty that is being created. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research was also seen issuing clarifications to allay the aspirants' fear. “This list is released based on an inspection conducted by MCI every year, which checks the standards and regulations followed by these institutes. This recent circular is more of a notice to the institutes by MCI, asking them to rectify errors or face action,” Dr Pravin Shingare, director, DMER told HT.
He added that this is a routine feature and parents as well as students have nothing to worry about. “There will be a problem only if the status of these ‘errors’ pointed out by the MCI remains the same till April or May. Those institutes will not be permitted to admit students then,” he added.
It is reported that in 2016, the Supreme Court appointed Oversight Committee, in a major decision has allowed 26 medical institutions to commence their academic session, starting September 30, 2016.This has been done overriding Medical Council of India’s (MCI), earlier rejection of 86 institutions. However, MCI with its recent inspections are finding deficiencies in the said medical colleges, thus threatening to debar them from taking admissions coming academic year 2017-18
