304 students debarred from writing 1st year MBBS exam by Pondicherry University

Puducherry: 304 MBBS students given admission under the management quota in 3 private medical colleges have been barred from appearing for their Ist year examinations. This comes as neither the Puducherry government nor the managements of colleges where they were given admission have submitted documentation proving their basic academic qualifications.


The Pondicherry University had postponed the Ist year MBBS examination for the academic year 2016-17 by a month. It finally took a decision to hold the samefrom July 13 for the remaining including the 146 entrants under the state quota.


"The first year MBBS exam is conducted only for those students whose qualifications are recognized and registered as matriculates of our university for the academic year 2016-17. For the remaining students admitted under management quota, examination will be conducted on receipt of recognition order from the academic section of the university," said K Tharanikkarasu, Controller of Examinations (in-charge) in an official communiqué.


The education norms call for the puducherry government and private medical colleges to submit the list of students joining MBBS course under state and management quotas along with documents proving their academic qualifications to the Pondicherry University.


The process of issuing concurrence to the university has begun revealed an official and added that the government will soon take a decision on it. "We are waiting for government's direction," said the official


TOI reports that 112 students from Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), 97 students from Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SVMC) and 95 students from Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital(SMVMC) have been debarred from appearing for the exam, while 38 students from Pims, 53 in SVMC and 55 from SMVMC have been allowed to appear for the first year MBBS examinations.


The university will hold theory examinations from July 13 to 19, 2017 and practical examinations from July 24 to 29, 2017. Online registration by the university and issuance of hall tickets shall begin from July 7. Registration will close on July 10.


Of the 1200 MBBS seats- 150 are in government colleges,600 in four institutions affiliated to deemed universities, and 450 in three private medical college and hospitals (Pims, SVMC and SMVMC). Meanwhile, 283 seats under the state quota have been surrendered by private colleges and institutions .


The Centralized admission committee (Centac) after drawing a merit list based on the plus two marks of students, filled 127 seats in government medical college (remaining 23 seats went to all India pool) and 283 seats (surrendered by private medical colleges to the government) in private medical colleges.


The remaining 767 seats in private colleges and institutions were filled under the management quota reports the TOI.
