3 new medical colleges in Maharashtra to add 300 more MBBS seats: Girish Mahajan

The three new medical colleges coming up in Maharashtra at Nandurbar, Jalgaon and Baramati. are likely to provide greater options for medical aspirants of the state. Along with these three new institutions will come three hundred additional MBBS seats in the government run medical education sector.


Medical Education Minister, Girish Mahajan said they planned to commence academic sessions for the year 2018-19 at Nandurbar and Jalgaon.


However, progress at the Nandurbar Medical College located in the tribal dominated belt bordering Gujarat, has been found to a bit delayed. The state cabinet has recently approved a composite medical hub at Jalgaon, which would include colleges imparting education in medicine, dentistry, ayurveda, homeopathy, nursing and para-medicine.


"We will attach the Nandurbar and Jalgaon medical colleges to the local civil hospitals to enable admissions next year," Minister Girish Mahajan told DNA . Temporary lecture halls are also to be constructed at the venue


Medical Education and Research Director (DMER), Dr. Pravin Shingare that the MCI would be inspecting the sites in November December , and the state fulfilling all queries in the following two months. The MCI, he informed, would then visit the colleges for a second time after February to check on compliances.


"We expect the final nod by March-April 2018, with admissions starting in July," added Dr. Shingare


Speaking about the Rs 400 crore Baramati medical facility Dr. Shingare revealed that work on it was underway and it was likely to be ready by 2018-19.


While the Nandurbar medical college will cost Rs 550 crore, the Jalgaon medical hub will need a contribution of Rs 1,200 crore in phases.


The Congress-NCP government had announced seven new medical colleges at Alibag, Chandrapur, Baramati, Satara, Nandurbar, Gondia and Mumbai. Presently only the Chandrapur and Gondia medical facilities are operational. The Alibag, Satara and Mumbai projects have not reached completion due to land constraints.


However, Mr. Mahajan said that the project at Satara would take on as approval of land for Satara has come their way in the form of the irrigation department's land.


Of the 48 medical colleges in Maharashtra, 16 are run by the state government. These facilities have a seat strength of 6,695 for under-graduate courses, 1,139 post-graduates seats and 261 post-graduate diploma seats.
