25 additional faculty appointments at Pudukottai Government Medical College

Tiruchi: The newly opened Pudukottai Government Medical College has been sanctioned 25 more faculty posts by the state government.


The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) said Dean S. Shradha had approved the proposal to create 25 new posts; most of them at the level of associate professors. Financial approval for the task is expected from the government soon. The new appointments felt the dean would strengthen the college functioning as per Medical Council of India (MCI) norms for handling second-year MBBS classes, beginning August.


The college started in 2017-18, had anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and clinical surgery for subjects elaborated by the dean.


A strength of 8 faculties in each department was there, including professors and associate professors. In addition to this, 4 more departs are proposed to be opened in microbiology, socio-preventive medicine, pharmacology, pathology. These departments would play a key role for 2nd-year students stepping into it from August.


Dr. Saradha revealed that a number of steps had been taken by the authorities to fulfill the norms of MCI for renewal of Letter of Permission to admit 150 students for 2019-20.


The college besides having a 700 bedded hospital had the required facilities for in-patients, out-patients, para-medical staff members, residential and residence quarters, laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls for the second year students reported the Hindu.


There were plans to increase the nursing strength from 150in the college to 300 and proposal for the same had already been sent to the government. A proposal to increase the number of paramedical staff too was under consideration.


The MCI team, the Dean informed was likely to visit the college in September to study the infrastructural facilities including classrooms, residential quarters laboratory and lecture halls.


The college needed to have acquired faculty members, staff nurses and new departments before the visit, she added.
