2 Kerala GMCs approved for up-gradation for adding PG Medical Seats, Rs 37 crore released: Health Minister

New Delhi: 2 Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in Kerala have been approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) concerning their up-gradation and infrastructural development in order to add more PG medical seats in these colleges. For that purpose, the Ministry has also sanctioned an amount of over Rs 36.9 crore.

The information to this effect was recently shared in Lok Sabha session where the Minister of State at MoHFW (MoS Health) Ashwini Kumar Choubey replied to the question raised by member PK Kunhalikutty regarding the financial assistance given for the up-gradation and infrastructure developments to the various Medical Colleges in Kerala under various schemes during the last five years.

On this, the Minister informed the Parliament that Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for Strengthening and up-gradation of State Government Medical colleges for starting new Post Graduate (PG) disciplines and increasing PG medical seats.

He notified that 2 Government medical colleges namely Government Medical College, Thrissur and Government Medical College, Kozhikode in Kerala have been approved under the said Scheme. Total Central share of Rs. 36.9621 crore has been released to the State.

Under National Health Mission, technical and financial support is provided to States/ Union Territories for strengthening their healthcare system including strengthening of district hospitals. Further, Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY) is a Central Sector Scheme that has two components including setting up of new branches of premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS); and up-gradation of existing GMCs. Upgradation of existing GMCs under PMSSY involves construction of Super Speciality Block (SSB)/ Trauma Centre and procurement of Medical Equipments.

Further on a specific question on whether any proposals are pending for the development of Manjeri Government Medical College under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana or under National Health Mission; the MoS Health replied in negative.
