Jabalpur: A major admission scam seems to be unfolding with the Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University finding irregularities in the admission of 179 MBBS students under NRI quota in private medical colleges of the state for the year 2016-17. The admission of 25 students has already been cancelled.

The Directorate of Medical Education has been asked by the university to cancel the admission of the remaining 154 students and also refrain from publishing their results.

Last month in an effort to investigate into the norms and guidelines followed by colleges for their admission processes, the university had given directions for the submission of documents of students admitted under the NRI quota, for courses such as MD, MS, MDS, BDS, & MBBS.

RS Sharma, Vice Chancellor, MP Medical Science University, Jabalpur said, "As per norms 15% of the seats in medical colleges are filled under NRI quota."

"After we looked into the documents provided by the medical colleges regarding admissions under NRI quota, we found that 179 of them had not been admitted as per the norms. Students admitted under NRI quota should be NRIs. That is the main condition under the quota. But 179 students despite not being NRIs, were given admission under the quota", he told HT.

After this admission scam surfaceded in private dental colleges, the MP Medical Science University constituted a 'probe committee' to look into the affairs of the dental colleges. The Committee investigations revealed that dental colleges had given admission to 96 candidates in Master of Dental Sciences (MDS), without them having appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). It was during the course of investigations that they also discovered irregularities in the admissions in the private medical colleges, under the NRI quota.
