100 MBBS seats increase for SCB Medical College maintained by MCI
The permission for total of 250 MBBs seats is for 5 years.
Cuttack: After being rejected twice this year, the Srirama Chandra Bhanja Medical College (SCB Medical college) and Hospital has been granted an increase of 100 MBBS seats for the next five years by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
In a letter to the Union Health Secretary, the MCI recommended that SCB Medical College and Hospital be granted recognition for 250 medical seats for 5-years.
"The Executive Committee of MCI considered assessment reports and decided to recommend to the Central government for recognition/approval of SCB Medical College and Hospital for the award of MBBS degree granted by Utkal University against the increased intake from 150 to 250 seats," Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary said in a communiqué.
The permission has been granted for five years, it added.
Odisha Suntimes reports that the recommendations were approved by the Oversight Committee.
According to the guidelines laid down by the apex medical regulator, "The medical college that seeks enhancement of undergraduate seats would be subject to scrutiny every year for five years to check whether the infrastructure and annual targets fixed by the Council are maintained."
Earlier this year, MCI inspection teams had visited the government-run facility twice to review healthcare facilities and its infrastructure. However, the recognition was denied.
It has been reported that in the year 2013, MBBS seats in the SCB Medical College were increased from 150 to 250. However, the MCI team had expressed displeasure during their visit last year and was under threat to lose the enhanced seats. The body had made adverse remarks for which the authorities had to submit the compliance report to retain the hiked seats.
