AIIMS RDA meet minister, demand accommodation for Resident Doctors

New Delhi: Delegation from RDA students union SYS AIIMS Met with the union minister Venkahaih Naidu and requested him to address the issue of accommodation for resident students. Student community is agitated because of ignorant attitude of AIIMS administration and health ministry towards medical education and accommodation of student.

"Being apex institute of AIIMS Delhi students and residents satisfaction should be on first priority of the government but somehow government of India is focused on opening new AIIMS in every state but demonizing the mother AIIMS whose brand value they are looking to cash out. AIIMS Delhi is not having enough seats in lecture theaters for 77 students, the students have no idea how can AIIMS administration even think to increase seats to 100. Residents are not Joining their dream institute due to lack of accommodation. Government should reconsider their decision to sell out 10 percent land and try to expedite the hostels for students and Doctors," said Dr Vijay Gujar,President RDA AIIMS

In a letter written to the minsiter, RDA AIIMS have pointed out that Currently resident doctors are not getting hostels even after 2^1/2 years of residency and when they are provided with hostels they might already being exam going so there is no point of shifting room for few months. Adding to shortage of rooms is "collapsing" of roofs and walls of the hostel buildings. At least 5 such incidents has been reported in past 5 months. So far there has not been any serious injuries (minor injuries have been reported)

The students have shown strong objection to the MOU between AIIMS and NBCC, whereby 10% of the land of AIIMS would be handed over to the organisation., stating that needs of AIIMS doctors should be met first before such decisions are undertaken.
