West Bengal: MCI derecognizes 400 medical seats
Kolkata: Seats of 3 Medical Colleges of West Bengal have been de recognized by the apex education regulator due to infra structural deficiencies for the year 2017-18.
The colleges that have been derecognized are: Durgapur IQ city (150 seats), Haldia Eyecare (100 seats), and Gouridevi Medical college (150 seats)
Earlier, the three colleges had sought MCI approval, however, the Ministry of Health on the advice of the apex education regulator declined recognition to them.
The state health department, on Tuesday, released a sheet matrix mentioning a reduction of 400 seats.
"They have not received approval. If they cannot arrange on time, we will conduct examination for 2200 seats instead of 2600," WB's Health-Education, Director, Debasish Bhattacharya said, adding, "If they cannot arrange on time, we will conduct examination for 2200 seats instead of 2600."
"We have given them enough chances to improve their infrastructure," said an MCI official.
Dean of Gouridevi Medical College, GC Sahu said, "It's very unfortunate. The country needs more doctors. But at such time MCI's role is very disappointing."
The dean's of other two medical colleges expressed the same thoughts for MCI reports TOI.
